Julie Malek, Board Member, is an educator with two decades of experience. Her current gig is as a librarian and reading partner coordinator at a 6-12 public school in Denver, Colorado. Prior to realizing this dream job, Julie worked as a pre-collegiate advisor for Colorado GEAR UP, a federally funded program designed to help low-income students achieve a college degree. Julie began her teaching career at Niles West High School in Skokie, Illinois teaching social studies. She later moved to her native Denver and taught in the middle school and high school divisions at Denver Jewish Day School, where her role included professional development, strategic planning, department chair, middle school advisor, and social studies teacher. She earned her B.A. and M.S. at Northwestern University.
Julie has served on the board of B’nai Havurah, a Reconstructionist community in Denver, as both member and Chair. Her current board work is with Colorado I Have A Dream, an organization focusing on providing social, emotional and academic support to students in under-resourced communities from kindergarten through college. In her free time, Julie enjoys reading (duh-she’s a librarian!), hiking, cross-country skiing, and any time she can eke out with her husband and two twenty-something daughters.
